Regular visitors to Long Beach Island remember the shack on the causeway. For many, the shack was a dear old friend welcoming them back every year. Sitting in the meadow as you drove by, it seemed to say, "You've finally arrived!" This iconic landmark was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
Another old friend is the historic Barnegat Lighthouse located on the northern tip of the island. It's affectionately known as Old Barney and was built in 1854. Reactivated in 2009 and operating from dusk till dawn, it's a reassuring beacon to many boaters and baymen.
